An exceptional Girard Perrgaux Chaux-de-Fonds Hunter cased pocket watch in heavy solid 18ct Rose gold case with very elaborate foliage engravings on both covers and initials of SW engraved on the plaque of the front cover.
This is the most important historical watch by Girard Perregaux that we have handled till date and one similar specimen can be found of the brand’s website from the year 1860. This watch is directly related to the founders of the company when they were expanding and managing the company.
According to the engraving Cronometro (Spanish) signed on the inner cover, this watch was meant for the South American market.
With the marriage of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux in 1854, the firm Girard Perregaux was founded two years later. From 1860, the three brothers of Marie Perregaux expanded the business with Francois taking the brand to Japan while the two brothers Henri and Jules taking it to North and South America. Girard Perregaux was a global brand since.
This watch is 150yrs old now and counting. It is presented in superb condition throughout with strong hinges, tight covers, the engravings on the case is deep and details clearly visible, there are no dents nor any major scratches while the movement shines like new with little signs of being worked on by poorly trained watch makers. The dial is original and shows natural patina while the hands are things of exquisite workmanship and beauty. This is not a regular watch but one with a pivoted detent escapement that provides high accuracy and efficiency in time keeping that is only found in the highest quality chronometer movements. A good article on this is covered by SJX here.
The high quality construction of the case was stamped by Girard Perregaux and this watch weighs a hefty 145gram. The gold value alone with movement would be nearly S$12890 today!
This watch belongs to a museum and will be very difficult to find another replacement of this calibre. Enjoy the pics.
