Produced in the 1950s, this Ref.3977SC Omega de Luxe Carré Galbé Tank automatic is a very rare model. It is a handsome watch that wears very well on the wrist with a bulbous center, curved case and down turned lugs.
The solid 18ct yellow gold case is heavy and offers a nice weight the moment you hold it.
The de-luxe dial features appliqué gold logo and signature followed by gold hour batons inlaid with black onyx bars and these premium materials were only reserved exclusively for solid 18ct gold models. The dial is showing some patina due to age. The gold case has of course been polished over the decades but there are two female heads of Helvetia hallmarks (0.750/18K) that remains very legible and located on the case band next to the crown and on the lug at 11 o’clock.
The pink gold gilt automatic movement shines and is keeping time.
A white gold example was sold by Phillips in Nov 2019 for a princely CHF32500.
Historically, Omega produced very few models of tank style watches with an automatic movement, making them scarce and highly sought after. We have acquired hundreds of vintage round Omegas and only a handful of tanks. This will be quite a statement in your collection and wrist. Although a gent’s model, it will be equally fine on a lady’s wrist.
