This is a very rare Rolex Oyster Chronometer with the sexy sculpted lugs nicknamed by collectors as bombay or bombé (French) and only three generations were known to exist with this 1010 as the final series. It started out in the late 1940s as Ref.5016/8 followed by 6090 and this 1010 or 1011 (with fluted bezel).
Our watch here dates to 1966 and the solid 14ct yellow gold case shows light wear with very mild hairline scratches that can be polished away but we left it as it is, as the time honoured oxidation is very sought after by collectors now. The 14ct squirrel hallmarks are clearly legible which shows that it was not polished much. The back cover is stamped 1011 (for fluted bezel) and it is very common for Rolex to mix the back covers of the common models in the past eg. the vintage Daytona 6239/41 and 6263/5 back covers were often interchanged.
Our specimen here is in near mint condition as can be seen from the images and the original brushed silver dial is in mint, like new condition too with aged tritium dots intact. The movement is similarly shining and all these inform us that the watch has been in a dry environment and seldom worn in the past six decades. It has a 20mm lug size and an original black lizard strap with an original gold plated buckle is fitted to it. We suspect that this watch has been serviced by Rolex as it has a thick replacement crystal that sparkles on the edge unlike after-market items and a new pair of hands that are common SOP items during service intervals.
A collector’s item not to be missed.
Further 3% discount for non-credit card payment as usual.
