Description
Vintage. Comes with original black leather Rolex box and dated paper.
This is a rare dress watch by Rolex for the UK market dating to the late Mid-century. The case was made by David Shackman & Sons Ltd with a stamped cameo of DS&S for Rolex and London hallmarks plus a date code to the year 1976. This watch came with a certificate attributing to Watches of Switzerland in Wolverhampton, UK dated 3.11.79 so it is period correct. There are some hand written numbers on the certificate but they don’t match the case, doesn’t correspond to any Rolex models and it was written “14ct Yellow Gold” and dated in the same hand writing with the same blue pen ink.
The period paper serves as an interesting compliment to the watch and doesn’t enhance its value tremendously unlike a coveted sports model.
In the pioneering years of the last century, Rolex contracted their UK watch cases from AL Dennison based in Birmingham, a prestigious case maker that supplied many notable Swiss and American watch makers. However, the company ceased in 1967 and Rolex turned to David Shackman & Sons Ltd. This company was established around 1915 in London and a manufacturer of gem set watches, jewellery, cigarette and vanity cases in precious metal. They were also a manufacturer for cameras and photographic equipment. During WW2, they made sextants and bombsights for the arm forces.
We have some watches with cases and bracelet that were made by the same British firm and a recent example is here.
This Rolex is a very charming dress watch that rarely surfaces for sale and a great alternative to vintage Cartiers that are trending now and will cost far more than our Rolex here. The size appeals to both ladies and gents. Further images available on our Facebook here.
