Description
Pre-owned. No box but has original certificate, svc invoice in docket and AP service pouch.
This is a rare 14790 Royal Oak from pre-2000 and is a slim Royal Oak based on the original design by Gérald Genta with it’s two piece monocoque case and a screw-down bezel. The modern day APRO are a lot thicker and although this is a 36mm, the case design and integrated bracelet extends farther out which makes the watch suitable for large wrists and feels like a 38mm watch. This watch is only 8mm thin.
Launched in the 1972 Basel Fair after two years of development, the original Royal Oak with a movement by JLC was the thinnest automatic with a date in the world and the large 39mm sports watch in steel retailed at 3,750 Swiss Francs was the most expensive steel watch of it’s time.
This watch was purchased from us in 2004 and after almost two decades of ownership, the owner sent this to the AP factory where it received a complete refurbishment. The watch was polished to specs with chamfered edges fresh as new, seals replaced and a new movement fitted by the factory. The final invoice was S$3823.80 (US$2900), a hefty bill but well worth the value as you can now wear this with a peace of mind for many years to come. The desirable grey dial and gold hands are period originals so the tritium doesn’t glow & bracelet is tight like new.
The blue plastic seal is a protective film applied by factory. There is however, one tiny ding on the edge of the gold bezel @ 7 o’clock but this is barely visible when u wear the watch. The glass is perfect and the watch bears a very nice serial No.1298.
Our watch here is now water resistant and sold with an international warranty by AP till June 2025. This is possibly the only watch of this reference available in this condition in the world now for a very reasonable price from us and for the collectors, this earlier Gérald Genta case is the one to go for.
